Breed details
The National Show Horse (NSH) was created in America to meet a growing need within the equine industry for beautiful show horses with athletic ability. The overwhelming choice for this new breed was an animal that would combine the beauty, refinement and stamina of the Arabian with the size and high-stepping motion of the American Saddlebred. The National Show Horse should be an athletic horse which retains size, beauty and refinement.

The following traits are considered desirable:

Balanced motion with obvious power from the hindquarters flowing into an elevated front end, the front legs showing both flexion and extension. Whether viewed at rest or in motion the horse must exhibit a natural presence and, when animated, extreme brilliance.

He should have a very long neck shapely and without a prominent crest, set high on the shoulder which is relatively upright with fine throatlatch.

He should have a relatively small head which is short and refined, with large eyes and small, well placed ears with a straight or slightly concave profile.

His withers should be pronounced and his shoulder should be very deep and well laid.

His back should be relatively short, closely coupled with a long hip and a level top line. His tail should be carried relatively high, in a natural and flowing manner.

His legs should be correct from all angles with long forearms and short cannon bones in front and long, well angled pasterns front and rear.

He should show refinement of bone but not be lacking in substance, especially in the chest, girth, shoulder and hip.
